Mostar is the political, financial, religious and cultural center of Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, as well as the unofficial capital of Herzegovina Region. The city is located 60 km from the Adriatic Sea and is located in the valley of the Neretva River, locked between the Velež, Hum and Chabulja mountains, which are part of the massif of the most extensive mountain range of the Balkan Peninsula - the Dinaric Mountains. The city is the fifth largest in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a population of about 110,000. It houses four of the federal ministries of the federation.

Even in the past, Mostar was one of the main tourist centers of the former Yugoslavia. Today, the main tourist sites are: the old town, the Old Bridge over the Neretva River, the Franciscan Church of St. Peter and Paul, the Museum of Herzegovina, the Karadjozbeg Mosque.
